Finishing the AWANA Year

Our kids have done amazingly well in the AWANA program at Southside Fellowship. They began the program in Feb, which was about six months into the AWANA year. All the other kids had worked through books, memorized many verses, received patches, jewels and other rewards.

Tristen and Haydn started at zero. They now have completed their first book and last week Tristen won the Clubber of the Month Award for the month of March. I was in Denver, a counseling trip, and Tristen called and could not contain herself. It has been a long while since I’ve seen that much ecstatic joy bubbling through the phone.

She said, among other things, “Dad, I couldn’t believe it! They called my name and I went up and they gave me the Clubber of the Month Award!”

This daddy was rejoicing. This little girl was a puddle of gratitude.

However, I think the thing that I’ve been most encouraged with is Haydn’s ability to memorize verses. He has memorized around 40 verses in two months. And he still remembers them! It takes him 5 minutes or less to memorize it and then he is done. It is astonishing to me.

I can’t do that.

The good news is that Haydn has always had certain struggles learning and remembering, but for some reason he can remember Scripture and it takes him no time to get it done. This has been most satisfying of all.

Ansa can’t wait to begin Cubbies in August. She was not old enough for this year. You have to be three. The year will end in four weeks and then they all get to start-up in the fall. That will be great. I’m so inspired by them.

I’m one happy Poppa!
